Background

The scope of this work for this operation was to
hoist a new refrigeration unit onto the roof of a
building opposite The Ritz Hotel in London. The
problem was that the only possible position for our
crane was directly above the main concourse of
Green Park underground station. To ensure safe
working practices which complied with very strict
regulations imposed by London Underground, it was
necessary for us to utilise a 180 ton crane,
positioned over the station concourse with the full
luffing jib attached. Large heavy duty steel mats
were placed beneath the outriggers of the crane to
ensure that the imposed loading of the crane was
within the acceptable safe working limits.

To allow for setting up of the crane we had to
partially close this very busy section of Piccadilly,
relocate seven bus stops and also re-schedule the
traffic lights.
